WSJ: Expect a Third-Party Candidate in 2012
In an Wall Street Journal editorial the authors stated "An increasing number of Americans are now searching beyond the two parties for bold and effective leadership."
Overall, a majority (57%) of all respondents said there is a need for a third party. More than half (51%) of voters favored having a third major political party. And for the first time in Gallup's history, a majority of Republicans embraced the idea.
The article did fail to mention the most successful third party in modern America, the Libertarian Party, as the national office noted in this letter to the WSJ.
Further backing up these results is a recent Reason-Rupe poll which finds nearly 73 percent of Americans say they "will" or "may" consider voting for an independent or third-party candidate in 2012. And in a three-way race like the 1992 presidential election, the poll finds there would be significant support for a candidate who is "conservative on economic issues and liberal on social issues." (In other words, a libertarian.) 48% of voters say they'd support such a candidate.
