Could 2012 be the year that everything comes together for Libertarians?
Former Governor Gary Johnson’s announcement last week that he’s leaving the GOP and running for president as a Libertarian brings a high-profile candidate to our Libertarian primary. Thousands of news stories and political commentaries were published and aired nationwide since his announcement where LP Chair Mark Hinkle signed him up to be a Life Member of our party.
In the spirit of many good organizations and candidates, the LPNH will be having our third "money bomb" on December 15th to celebrate Bill of Rights Day. Our goal is to raise at least $1791, to commemorate the year the Bill of Rights was ratified.
Thank you to all the members, old and new, who came to the 2011 LPNH state convention. Highlights included hearing from two presidential campaigns, raising some money for ballot access and meeting new Libertarians. We had some good back and forth discussing this year's activity and how we move forward.
The Repeal of what, you may ask. The repeal of Prohibition. On December 5th, 1933, the 21st Amendment to the Constitton, repealed the 18th and the spectre of Prohibition was banished from the land.
Join us for our annual state convention on December 3rd.
The business meeting is free and starts at 3pm, followed by a dinner social at 5pm. We're meeting at Chen Yang Li in Bedford.
All the presidential campaigns have been invited, the candidates that are unable to make may be sending representatives to advocate for their case. We will have a forum among those that attend to help us evaluate the campaigns and pledge some early support. We will be pledging at least one vote for the nominating convention in May. The more candidates who make it, the more votes we will pledge.
As you already know, the LPNH has embarked upon an ambitious project, to complete a "party wide" ballot access petition drive for the 2012 general election. We haven't done this since 2000. In fact, we are the only political organization in the history of New Hampshire to have ever completed such an endeavor. Now we are doing it again.
Thanks to a generous start from the national LP we have completed the first phase of the drive, obtaining enough raw signatures to technically qualify. Obviously, no drive ever gets 100% validity, so we must collect more to ensure we have enough validated signatures so we may place all our candidates on the ballot next November.
So I am asking you to help us complete our petition drive.
I want to be done this year. If we are done this year, we don't have to worry about competing with the other minor parties and groups like Americans Elect. I want to give a great report at our state convention on December 3rd. We can spend all of 2012 focused on recruiting the best candidates and creating the best campaigns. In other words, doing what a political party is supposed to be doing in an election year.
A recent letter from the Department of Justice threatening state employees in charge of implmenting medical marijuana laws with prosecution, has forced some governors to re-evaluate and even veto popular legislation — all seemingly in violation of what the medical marijauana community thought was a cease-fire with the federal government. Read the raw story here. And an editorial from the OC Register.
Here's my fantasy: Libertarians are elected to the presidency and to majorities in Congress. What would happen next? Well, if libertarians were "in charge," you'd have more freedom and prosperity.
